Report: £1.7m price-tag puts Sunderland off Florian Kamberi move

Sunderland were interested in signing Florian Kamberi after his superb run in the Scottish Premiership.

According to a report from The Scottish Sun, Sunderland were interested in signing Florian Kamberi this summer after his stunning loan spell in the Scottish Premiership with Hibs before the Black Cats learned his asking price.

Kamberi joined Neil Lennon’s side in January and proved to be an inspired addition at Easter Road as he scored nine goals in just 14 league games during the second-half of the season to help Hibs finish fourth in their first year back at the highest level.

The Scottish Sun reports that Hibs have the option to buy the 23-year-old permanently from parent club Grasshoppers, but Sunderland attempted to scupper their hopes of keeping him by making their own move for the Swiss.

According to The Scottish Sun, new Black Cats boss Jack Ross wanted Kamberi and was keen to make him one of his first signings until he found out that the League One side will have to pay £1.7 million if they want a deal.

Regardless of their budget, it is perhaps little surprise that Sunderland do not appear to be overly keen to sign Kamberi for the seven-figure amount despite his brilliant spell in Scotland this past season.

Even if Ross has a much greater budget than his predecessors have had to work with this summer, it is still a significant gamble to pay £1.7 million for a striker who had previously scored just four goals in 53 club appearances during his career.
