All the talk about outgoings at Arsenal is centering around one player right now – Mesut Ozil.
But there’s another senior member of Mikel Arteta’s side who also looks set to leave.
Arsenal signed Sokratis Papastathopoulos for £17 million from Borussia Dortmund in 2018 and less than three years later, the Greek centre-back might be on his way.
Like Ozil, Sokratis was left out of Mikel Arteta’s Premier League and Europa League squad, which meant the writing has been on the wall for the 32-year-old since October more or less.
The Times reported last week that Arsenal were set to terminate his contract, with the defender only having six months left on his deal.
And Corriere Dello Sport have claimed that Genoa are strongly interested – and have even offered the veteran the captaincy if he joins the Italian club.
Sokratis hasn’t covered himself in glory in terms of defending, but he has often exhibited strong leadership skills under former Arsenal boss Unai Emery.
There’s no way back for him at the Emirates, but this move to Genoa would suit all parties and hopefully something can be agreed.
