Gauchazh Sport claim that new Benfica boss Jorge Jesus has lined up his transfer targets for the upcoming season.
The legendary Portuguese manager is back at Benfica after a hugely successful spell at Flamengo last season. The Brazilian outfit won almost everything and many top clubs were attracted to a few of their players.
One such player is Gerson. The 23-year-old midfielder had a brilliant season for Flamengo in 2019, scoring five goals and providing eight assists in all competitions.
That reportedly caught the eye of Jose Mourinho’s Tottenham. Goal reported in June that Spurs had tabled a £16 million bid for Gerson in a bid to bring him to North London this summer.
That would have been an impressive signing for Tottenham. Gerson is an all action-midfielder who would add a lot to Tottenham’s current players in the centre of the park.
However, the move might well break down now. Tottenham seem to be focusing their efforts on Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg which has made Gerson free to make a move elsewhere.

It now looks like he might do just that. Gauchazh Sport reveal that Gerson’s former boss Jesus wants to bring him to Portugal to play for Benfica. The relationship between the player and the manager could make it very easy to secure a deal for Benfica which leaves Tottenham out of the picture.
Missed opportunity for Spurs?
It would really be a shame to see Spurs miss out on Gerson. The Brazilian has a ton of potential and it won’t be a surprise to see his value go up massively in a few years’ time if he makes a move to Benfica.
He would then be out of Spurs’ reach and Tottenham fans will be left rueing yet another missed opportunity in the transfer window.
