Angus Gunn is keen on the idea of leaving Southampton on loan this summer after falling behind Alex McCarthy in Ralph Hasenhuttl’s pecking order, as reported by The Sun (21 June, page 59).
The former England U21 goalkeeper started the 2019/20 season as the Saints’ number one.
But while Hasenhuttl might have survived that 9-0 thumping against Leicester City with his place at St Mary’s intact, Gunn did not.
The 24-year-old endured surely the worst night of his professional career as Southampton suffered a record-breaking home defeat at the hands of Ayoze Perez, Jamie Vardy and co.
And while there was some fine finishes in that fateful night on the South Coast, it would be an understatement to suggest that Gunn would have been disappointed with his contribution.
The former Manchester City youngster has now been left on the bench for each of Southampton’s last 20 Premier League games, with McCarthy proving solid between the sticks.

And, according to The Sun, the £13 million Gunn would struggle to turn down the chance to prove himself all over again on loan.
Even though he is now in the Premier League record books for all the wrong reasons, there is surely no shortage of Championship clubs who willing to rescue a man who shone in the second tier for Norwich in 2017/18.
After all, if you judged every footballer at their very worst moment, then empty stadiums would be nothing new.
