An ‘N’Golo Kante-like’ player with whom The Daily Mail claimed Burnley held talks and whose signing, it added, was discussed by both Everton and Leicester City appears to be heading to Germany.

The Angers midfielder Baptiste Santamaria is also said to have interested Burnley, Everton and Leicester’s Premier League rivals Aston Villa earlier in the year.

But he is expected to join SC Freiburg after missing Angers’ training session on Wednesday morning, according to Le10Sport.

The website adds that Freiburg have convinced the French side, who wanted €15 million (around £13.7m), to part with Santamaria.

Missing out on Santamaria would arguably affect Everton significantly less so than Burnley or Leicester, with the Toffees having already signed a trio of midfielders, Allan, Abdoulaye Doucoure and James Rodriguez, this summer.

Neither Burnley, who have lost Jeff Hendrick in the Frenchman’s position, nor Leicester have added to their options in that part of the pitch so far.

25-year-old Santamaria won three caps for his country’s Under-20 side, but has yet to earn a senior call up.
