Southampton goalkeeper Angus Gunn could return to former club Norwich City after the Saints ripped up his two-year loan deal with Stoke City, according to Hampshire Live.
It was all going rather well for the England U21 shot-stopper at St Mary’s. That was, of course, until a fateful October night on the South Coast.
It is 19 months now since Leicester City ran riot in Southampton with Gunn, conceding nine goals in a record-breaking defeat, finding himself on the wrong end of history.
The £13.5 million man has not played a Premier League game since.
According to Hampshire Live, however, Gunn may be offered a top-flight lifeline – and a return to the club where he made his name as one of the most talented, up-and-coming stoppers in the Football League.
Newly-promoted Norwich want reinforcements between the sticks to ease the burden on Tim Krul, the 33-year-old Dutchman who suffered a few worrying injury problems in 2020/21.
Southampton are open to either selling or farming out Gunn, having scrapped an arrangement that would have seen the Norwich-born 25-year-old spend a second spell on loan at Stoke City next season.
“Angus is very highly-rated and a really talented goalkeeper,” Canaries boss Daniel Farke said during their time together at Carrow Road in 2017.
“He’s brilliant with his feet as well as his hands and is tall too. I’m looking forward to working with such a great talent.”
Southampton are also expected to cut ties with Shane Long, Jake Vokins and the Newcastle-linked Yan Valery, although Mario Lemina and Celtic loanee Moi Elyounoussi could be handed a fresh start under Ralph Hasenhuttl.
