NEWCASTLE UPON TYNE, ENGLAND - MARCH 12: Jacob Murphy of Newcastle United (23) runs to cross the ball as Matt Targett of Aston Villa (18) attempts to close him down during the Premier League match between Newcastle United and Aston Villa at St. James Park on March 12, 2021 in Newcastle upon Tyne, England. Aston Villa’s Matt Targett is set for a surprise deadline day move to Newcastle United, as reported by 90min

If Newcastle were paying a transfer fee for the Villa 26-year-old and buying him outright, then it would be understandable.

But it seems as though Targett, who was replaced by January signing Lucas Digne in Villa’s XI recently, is moving to St James’ Park on a loan deal until the end of the season.

It is reported by 90min that Targett is Newcastle’s ‘number one’, pardon the pun, target at left-back.

The £11 million Villa player’s (Sky Sports) representatives were on Tyneside on Sunday to work out a deal and he is now set for his medical on deadline day.

If Targett does leave, then it strengthens Eddie Howe’s backline and adds some much-needed experience in their relegation battle.

But, from Villa’s perspective, that would leave them without a bonafide back-up to Digne.

Ashley Young has played at left-back this season and Kortney Hause can also play that role if need be.

But if Digne were to get injured, then would Villa fans be happy with having either Young or Hause deploy that role, especially if it’s for a high percentage of games?

Well, with this move seemingly being imminent, it seems as though everyone will find out as this 2021/22 Premier League campaign enters its most crucial stage.

It also has to be said, this probably signals the end of Targett’s time in the Midlands because, if Steven Gerrard is keen to let him go just like that.

Then he probably won’t make him part of his long term plans when things get proper serious in the summer and he really changes the squad up.
