West Brom and Crystal Palace are keen on Cenk Tosun, but the striker’s £100,000-a-week wages could scupper his chances of a loan move away from Everton, according to the Sun (10 January, page 58).
With just three new signings being made by Premier League clubs so far, this has been something of a window to forget.
Yet the landscape could change very quickly.
Because Tosun is not the only player desperate for a move this month, knowing that a mid-season change of scenery is a must if he wants to play a key role for his country at the European Championships next summer.
The former Besiktas talisman has played just 43 minutes of Premier League football this season.
With Burak Yilmaz in fine form at Lille, Tosun could lose his place as Turkey’s number one striker unless things change at club level.
The Sun reports that Sam Allardyce, who paid £27 million for Tosun during his brief spell as Everton manager a few years ago, would be keen on a reunion at The Hawthorns.
West Brom are the division’s third-lowest scorers with just 11 goals in 17 games and are crying out for a man capable of leading the line effectively, while providing Matheus Pereira and co with something to hit in the final third.
Crystal Palace are also interested, 12 months after taking Tosun to Selhurst Park in a loan deal that was ruined almost immediately by an ill-timed cruciate ligament injury.
Roy Hodgson remains a fan of the skillful centre-forward but, with those £100,000-a-week wages representing a substantial stumbling block, Tosun may be destined to spend the next five months glued to the Goodison Park bench.
