Tottenham Hotspur defender Jan Vertonghen could join Premier League rivals Manchester City when his contract expires at the end of the season, according to The Telegraph.

Revenge is best served in the transfer market, it seems.

And while Pep Guardiola would never publicly admit that he’d love to get one over on Jose Mourinho, the steely-eyed Spaniard would surely be rubbing his hands together in glee under the cover of darkness at the thought of stealing an experienced, proven performer from under the nose of his old adversary.

Vertonghen is set to become a free agent in a matter of weeks.

And, with Spurs unable to agree an extension for one of their longest serving players, there is a very real chance that the £100,000-a-week Belgian could be wearing sky blue next season.

While the 33-year-old has been heading down the metaphorical hill for some time now, Vertonghen would undoubtedly strengthen a City defence which has, in truth, gifted Liverpool the Premier League title.

Nicolas Otamendi and John Stones would struggle to get into the starting XI of Wolves or Sheffield United at present, let alone the 2019 champions, while Fernandinho at centre-half should only ever be a short-term solution at best.

So it’s no wonder that Vertonghen’s availability has not gone unnoticed at the Etihad – especially with left-footed central defenders being about as common as a hen with a pair of gleaming pearly whites.
