This week it has been reported that Tottenham Hotspur’s talented midfielder Harry Winks could have made a sensational decision regarding his international future.

The Mirror were one of many to report that Winks could be considered for Spain after it emerged he has Spanish grandparents.

But Guillem Balague, a Spanish football expert, soon confirmed that the Spanish FA had no intention of calling him up as he is not eligible – it is his great grandparents that are Spanish.

Winks has surely been dealt a slice of luck in not having to make such a decision.

The talented midfielder has been a star for Spurs this season and is already being earmarked for a potential England call-up.

But the lure of playing in midfield for Spain, considering Winks’ style of play, would have been strong.

In the long run however, the Tottenham star will be better off by playing for the England national team.

He is more likely to get plenty of caps with England then he was with Spain and he could also help add some of the guile that England are often missing from their midfield area.

For England and Winks, the news that he is not eligible for Spain should be welcomed as good news for his international future.
