Ollie Watkins made headlines a few months ago when he admitted that he wants to join Arsenal at some point in his career.

It was a pretty ambitious claim given that the 24-year-old plays for a Championship club – Brentford – but Watkins is certainly doing his chances of moving to North London at some point no harm at all.

The Bees marksman opened the scoring in this evening’s visit of Preston North End to make it 25 goals in the league alone for the Torquay-born striker.

On this kind of form, Watkins is certainly good enough to play in the Premier League.

And Trevor Sinclair has paid him an even bigger compliment on Twitter, likening him to a certain Jermain Defoe.

Here’s how the former Manchester City attacker reacted to Watkins’s goal on social media this evening:

Arsenal were linked with a few strikers earlier in the summer, but there isn’t as much speculation about Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang or Alexandre Lacazette leaving any longer.

They both still could, but for the moment it looks like they’re staying and although the Gunners couldn’t possibly gamble by signing Watkins as a replacement for either one of them, the more goals he scores, the more attention he’s going to get from top-flight clubs.
