Newcastle United goalkeeper Rob Elliot has claimed that Newcastle’s work-rate can’t be questioned despite the club’s disappointing form in recent weeks.
Although they have started the season rather well overall and are in 11th place in the Premier League, Newcastle have lost their last three Premier League games in succession, against Manchester United, Bournemouth and Burnley.
Elliot, however, was eager to point out that each player in the Newcastle squad is committed towards helping the club’s fortunes to improve.
Elliot told the club’s official website: “If you want to question the quality, that’s something that is up for debate for anyone, but I don’t think you can question the commitment, the work-rate or the effort.
“We’ve got players who genuinely want to be here, want to work for the club and will give everything.”
Newcastle return to action tomorrow afternoon with a home game against Watford and, although a tough encounter is expected, the Magpies will be determined to prevail.
Although they haven’t been especially vulnerable defensively this season – they have conceded 14 times in the Premier League – Newcastle have lacked conviction going forwards, as demonstrated by the fact that they have found the net on only eleven occasions.
It seems clear that a new striker is a necessity in the January transfer window if Newcastle are to become more effective as a unit, but, despite their recent form, Benitez’s side should be able to at least preserve their Premier League status this season.
