There’s an abundance of clubs reportedly keen on signing Tottenham Hotspur winger Steven Bergwijn, according to Fabrizio Romano.

The 24-year-old has managed only 13 minutes of Premier League football at Tottenham since Antonio Conte replaced Nuno Espirito Santo in North London in November.

Speculation is rife that Ajax are among the clubs keen on the former PSV Eindhoven attacker, who joined Spurs under Jose Mourinho almost two years ago.

But the Italian journalist, speaking on his Here We Go podcaast, has revealed that ‘many clubs’ are vying for Bergwijn’s affections ahead of the January transfer window.

Romano said: “Bergwijn is a different situation, because many clubs are interested in him long time.

“It depends on Antonio Conte. If Antonio Conte gives the green light to make him leave in January, many clubs will be ready to jump in this negotiation.

“So remember the name of Bergwijn, because he could be one of the players prepared to leave.”

Surplus to requirements

Honestly, it hasn’t been a stunning start to life under the new Tottenham manager.

In fact, Conte omitted him from the squad that travelled to Slovenia for a Europa Conference League defeat by Mura a fortntight ago, which perhaps spoke volumes.

Already it looks as if the Netherlands international has an uphill battle to save his Lilywhites career and Romano is correct – this appears like one transfer which may potentially materialise.

It remains to be seen if he joins Ajax but, one thing is for sure, he isn’t ruthless enough in an attacking sense for the Premier League.

Forty two appearances have yielded only four goals and five assists which, for an investment of £25 million, is an underwhelming retutrn.
