Gary Lineker took to Twitter yesterday evening to react to one particular moment from West Ham’s impressive 3-0 win over Sheffield United.

After 24 Premier League games this season, the Hammers were finally awarded a penalty when Chris Basham fouled Jesse Lingard in the 39th minute.

Declan Rice stepped up to dispatch the ball from 12 yards in the 41st minute, to finally end West Ham’s penalty hoodoo this term.

After the England international scored, Lineker reacted to the fact this was the Irons’ first spot-kick of the season.

It’s quite staggering that it’s taken so long for West Ham to win a penalty this season.

It’s also quite ironic that it was Rice who scored it, as he sarcastically remarked about the club’s lack of penalties on February 7th.

Just eight days later, the 22-year-old made sure his side would no longer be the only team in England’s top-flight without a penalty to their name.

In addition to his effort from 12 yards, Rice was excellent against the Blades.

West Ham’s No.41 had two shots – both of which were on target – while his passing was also very tidy.

Rice finished the game with a 91.5% passing accuracy, which was better than any other West Ham player to start the match, according to WhoScored.
