The Premier League side booked their place in the fourth round of the EFL Cup, but only just.
West Ham United’s Dimitri Payet scores the only goal from a free-kick
West Ham United supporters were left expressing their relief and gratitude to Dimitri Payet after the Frenchman bagged a stoppage-time goal to send Slaven Bilic’s men into the fourth round of the EFL Cup.
Despite the Hammers’ recent poor form in the Premier League – they have lost their last four games – they would have been expecting to cruise through to the last 16 as they were pitted against League Two side Accrington Stanley.

However, John Coleman’s men managed to frustrate the Irons for over 90 minutes. But as it appeared that extra-time was looming at the London Stadium, Payet stepped up to produce yet another moment of brilliance in the dying seconds.

The playmaker broke the deadlock with a free-kick to break Accrington hearts and ensure that West Ham would be taking their place in the draw for the next round.
And while West Ham fans praised their goalscoring hero as they took to Twitter to discuss the narrow win, the nature of the victory meant that much of the gloom that lingered over the club before the game still remains as the supporters struggle to understand why it took 96 minutes to break down a side currently situated in mid-table in the fourth tier.
