Lyon defender Jason Denayer has reportedly decided to leave the French giants this summer, with Newcastle United favourites to sign the centre-back
According to L’Equipe via Walfoot, the 26-year-old Belgian international will opt to leave the Ligue 1 side at the end of this season, with Denayer’s contract at Lyon set to expire this summer and the defender not even considering signing a new deal.
Denayer has hardly featured for Lyon in 2022, with the former Manchester City star falling out of favour with Lyon manager Peter Bosz, and Newcastle are seemingly leading the chase to sign the defender.
With Lyon signing Denayer in 2018 for a reported £11m, the French club are set to lose on any sort of transfer fee for the defender, much to the joy of Newcastle ahead of the summer window.
Het Nieuwsblad were the first to report of Newcastle’s interest in Denayer, and with the Belgian now set to leave Lyon for nothing, Eddie Howe’s side will consider them strong favourites to sign the centre-back.
Labelled as ‘reliable’ by Total Football Analysis, Denayer could be a great addition for Newcastle with the 26-year-old set to leave Lyon for free, with the Magpies eager to strengthen at the back this summer.

With Denayer set to leave this summer, Newcastle are now in the prime position to add to their defence with a quality signing that could save PIF millions in the transfer window.
Indeed, what makes this rumour even more exciting is that Newcastle could realistically wrap up this signing of Denayer sooner rather than later, with other clubs no doubt catching wind that the Belgian will be a bargain move this summer.
