Kolo Toure has reportedly been placed on Liverpool’s released list.
According to Sky Sports, Kolo Toure’s exit from Liverpool has been confirmed with the centre-back set to walk away from the club at the end of the expiring contract.
It is a decision which many Liverpool supporters have been taken aback by, illustrating how the former Ivory Coast international has been a good player for the club and still boasts plenty of quality.
Toure will no doubt have the pick of a number of top clubs to join this summer, yet one side which could interest him the most is a return to work under Brendan Rodgers at Celtic.
Rodgers signed Toure while he was the Liverpool manager, and the defender soon became a key fixture for the Merseyside club under the Northern Irishman’s tenure at Anfield.
Rodgers, now in charge at Celtic after succeeding Ronny Deila, has a big job on his hands in Scotland as he looks to improve the team both on the domestic front and on the European stage.
The Hoops boast a decent squad capable of winning every domestic trophy they are involved in, and a boost in quality in certain areas will give them a better chance of progression in the Champions League.
Toure may now be 35, but he would undoubtedly improve Celtic’s defence and signing him on a short-term deal could work out well for all parties involved – not least Rodgers, who will be joined by a familiar face.
The former Arsenal man made 14 Premier League appearances last season, as well as playing in both the League Cup and Europa League final as the Reds suffered from injuries at the back.
He may be in high demand and come at a cost, but the cost of his likely high salary would be a risk worth taking as the defender could be key in the qualification for the Champions League group stage.
