‘Relax’: Deeney suggests Arsenal fans overreacting to player who’s ‘trying to do more’

Troy Deeney has urged Arsenal supporters to ‘relax’ on TalkSport Breakfast (26/10/20 at 7:40 am) amid worries about Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s form.

The recently relegated Watford striker thinks there is this cry that Aubameyang is ‘finished’ and he believes his recent contract renewal is making people think differently.

Aubameyang hasn’t scored in his last five Premier League games, which is a minor blip, but when you play for Arsenal and have set the standards the Gabon star has set then there is going to be an overreaction.

Deeney suggested that there is an overreaction to his recent form and he made it clear that strikers in England’s top-flight aren’t going to score every week.

“Is it possible to say that he has taken a little bit more pressure on with the captaincy,” Deeney told TalkSport. “Trying to do more. Trying to get others involved. He is probably a bit more selfless in trying to help everybody else.

“I just think it comes down to the money. I think people starting hearing the money and signing this big contract then go ‘oh, he hasn’t scored in five weeks, he’s finished’. It’s like ‘relax’.

“Beforehand, he was scoring and everyone was like, ‘he has to sign and if we let him go then it’s a disaster’. But there aren’t many strikers who score every single week in the Premier League.

“I think with Aubameyang, he is very much, again looking in from the outside, that’s a very young Arsenal team coming through. They have a lot of ideas that Arteta is trying to put in. He has to A) get it himself or B) show all the other guys that this is how we do it.”

What doesn’t help Aubameyang’s cause is that Arsenal themselves aren’t exactly ripping it up in the Premier League.

Not only that, when Mikel Arteta decides to play him on the right against Leicester then it’s not exactly going to help his cause.

Either way, Aubameyang will be back to his best sooner rather than later. The biggest concern should be that Arsenal needs him firing to look good themselves. Others clearly need to step up and lead on that pitch also.
