Marc Overmars has reportedly rejected the chance to join Newcastle United to remain in his position with Dutch giants Ajax.
According to the Athletic, the director of football has opted to stay with Ajax following interest from Newcastle. The Magpies are eager to bring in a new figure to oversee club transfers, with Overmars one of the club’s top picks.
However, Overmars will not be joining Eddie Howe at Newcastle. With the Telegraph reporting that Michael Emenalo is the favourite to take up a director of football position at the club in the coming days.
Newcastle are eager to restructure the club under their new owners. With Howe being announced this week as the man to take the helm in this new era for the northeast side.
Yet losing out on Overmars is a big blow for Newcastle. The former Arsenal attacker is regarded as one of the best football negotiators in the game, with Ajax currently one of the most in-form sides in Europe.
Indeed, given the Amsterdam side’s form in both the league and UEFA Champions League, is understandable why Overmars has rejected to join Newcastle at this stage of the season.
