The West Ham United teenager continues to struggle for minutes at his new loan club.
West Ham United fans have been championing Reece Oxford for quite some time, with the centre-back excelling on his debut against Arsenal when he was just 16.
However, in the years that followed Oxford struggled for minutes and a frustrating loan spell at Reading last time out yielded only five appearances, the last of which was a 7-1 hammering at the hands of Norwich City.
He would not play again for the Royals, and earlier this summer he headed to the Bundesliga for a temporary stint at Borussia Monchengladbach.
It was hoped Oxford – who is still only 18 – would be afforded the chances previously given to Chelsea’s Andreas Christensen, who excelled at the club and ended a two-year loan spell with 82 appearances before heading back to Stamford Bridge.
However Oxford us yet to get a single minute for his new club, making do with a role as an unused substitute against Koln, Augsburg and Eintracht Frankfurt.
The West Ham youngster still has plenty of time to force his way into the starting XI but on early evidence that will not be easy and one wonders if last season’s frustrations are set to follow him to Germany.
The problem for Oxford is that he made his impact at such a young age that he is now expected to command a regular spot ahead of players vastly more experienced.
In time his talent should shine through, but Wets Ham supporters would be forgiven for wondering if Oxford would have been best served staying at the London Stadium and pushing for chances in the cups.
