Huddersfield Town have beaten Championship and Yorkshire rivals Leeds United to former Forest Green Rovers star Reece Brown.

Leeds United fans celebrate during the Sky Bet Championship match between Leeds United and Millwall at Elland Road on March 30, 2019 in Leeds, England.

What on earth went wrong for Leeds United?

Marcelo Bielsa’s team looked almost certain to be heading back to the Premier League last season, only for a dramatic late-season collapse to consign them to yet another year of Championship football.

And while some have blamed the errors of January signing Kiko Casilla, an increasingly shaky backline and injuries to star players, a lack of creativity and firepower from central midfield didn’t help either.

Leeds were the Championship’s most exciting team before Christmas, but once Samu Saiz left for Spain in January, they became predictable, sluggish and worryingly toothless in the final third.

Saiz was never replaced and that cost them dear. And, with the transfer window only a few weeks old, have Leeds already missed out on a man who could have stepped into the silky Spaniard’s shoes?

According to The Sun (18 June, page 52), Leeds were hoping to sign Forest Green midfielder Reece Brown. But, in a bitter blow, he has joined Yorkshire rivals Huddersfield Town instead after producing 15 goals and 11 games in League Two.

And, in his official unveiling as a Huddersfield player, Brown reeled off a series of strengths which suggests he could have been the missing link Leeds needed.

“I’d like to think I’m a creative midfielder so I want to create opportunities and score goals for myself, that’s my main aim,” Brown told The Examiner. “I like both goals and assists, I’ll take both – it doesn’t really matter! They’re both effective so I don’t really mind.”

Leeds cannot rely on 34-year-old Pablo Hernandez forever. They need someone to step up and ease the creative burden and Brown could have done exactly that.
