Why the Southampton winger should get the nod from Gareth Southgate for upcoming internationals with Germany and Lithuania.
Southampton’s Nathan Redmond celebrates scoring their first goal
Nathan Redmond is finally showing the form at Southampton that saw the winger billed as one of the brightest young talents in English football.
The 23-year-old was capped at every level by England from Under-16s to Under-21s, but is yet to make his first senior appearance for the national side.
Gareth Southgate announces his Three Lions squad for upcoming matches against Germany (March 22, friendly) and Lithuania (March 26, World Cup qualifier) later today (March 16) and Redmond should be on the list.
In key areas this season, the winger betters both his positional rivals in Raheem Sterling and Theo Walcott.
Despite having played one more Premier League game than Sterling and five more than Walcott, he is far superior in both key passes (Redmond: 677, Sterling: 649, Walcott: 326) and chances created (Redmond: 43, Sterling: 35, Walcott: 11).
Southampton’s Nathan Redmond
Another below par performance from Sterling against Monaco this week in the Champions League suggests Pep Guardiola’s arrival at Manchester City has not yet been the catalyst to spark his potential.
Meanwhile, at 28, Walcott has been nothing more than average during much of his 11-year stay at Arsenal, despite the former Saint promising so much.
It is time for a change and Redmond more than deserves his chance.
