Speaking on the Sky Sports Pitch to Post Podcast, Jamie Redknapp has shared what people close to Tottenham have told him about Jose Mourinho’s training at Tottenham.
Redknapp claims that people involved with the club have said that the sessions weren’t very expansive, stating that they were more focused on stopping the other team rather than developing their own game.
“There was a really telling moment after the game when Gareth Bale said ‘we’re Tottenham, we attack, that’s what we do.’ It may be another word, but that’s certainly what he alluded to,” Redknapp said.
“That’s what Tottenham have to do, they have to play with a bit of flair. With Jose, there’s no doubt there will have been a load of sessions, and I’ve spoken to people involved with the club, and the sessions weren’t very expansive, they were about how you stop the other team
“With Tottenham, their perceptions and their fans, they want to win, but they want to play a style of football, and under Jose, they weren’t winning and they were playing poor football, it was awful to watch.”
If this is true, then it’s no wonder players got fed up of Mourinho.
Regardless of how well-paid these professional players are, at their heart they still want to enjoy playing football, and when you’re playing in such a defensive manner, the game becomes a bit of a chore.
As Redknapp says, it was awful to watch, and we can only hope that Ryan Mason can inject a bit of life back into this side.
