Jamie Redknapp has claimed that the ‘imperious’ Virgil van Dijk is the reason why ‘everything has gone right’ for Liverpool and Jurgen Klopp, as he told Sky Sports Premier League.

The former midfielder has claimed that Van Dijk ‘changed everything’ when he was signed up by Liverpool for a then world-record fee for a defender in January 2018.

At the time, many questioned why those in the Anfield boardroom threw so much money at the thriving Southampton star.

But, the ice-cool Dutchman quickly shut off any critics and he can now be lauded as the best defender in the world.

Nonetheless, this is what Redknapp made of Van Dijk and what he has done for the Merseyside club.

“Virgil van Dijk was just incredible,” said Redknapp. “Imperious. The way that he defends and reads the game.

“His signing is the reason why everything has gone right under Jurgen Klopp. He was the man that changed everything when they made that signing.

“He has been that good. Van Dijk has got that aura about him that only a few players in the world possess.”

Van Dijk’s long-term injury last season proved how much of an impact he has on this Liverpool side.

The whole team fell to pieces, including losing an astonishing six home games on the bounce.

Both Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andy Robertson weren’t the same when they were bombing forward, but it’s a different story this season.

After their League Cup final win at Wembley, that’s one trophy in the cabinet for this season, as Klopp and his players are now surging for the other three that remain.
