Arsenal star Olivier Giroud scored a goal of the season contender.

Pundit Jamie Redknapp has told The Mail that he believes Olivier Giroud’s scorpion goal was ‘lucky’ and it would not make his personal choice of the 20 top goals in the Premier League era.

The French striker’s sensational effort helped decide Arsenal’s match with Crystal Palace, with the Gunners winning 2-0.

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger was quoted after the game by The BBC stating Giroud’s goal was one of the top five in his reign in charge as manager, a spell which has spanned 21 years and counting.

Redknapp was not so glowing, and even cited a goal from Tottenham midfielder Dele Alli scored last January as an example of one which he considered to be better.

He said: “I am taking nothing away from Giroud but his strike does not make my top 20 Premier League goals.

“There is always an element of luck with those sorts of goals.

“As good as it was, I wouldn’t put it in the same bracket Thierry Henry’s volley against Manchester United, Wayne Rooney’s overhead kick against Manchester City or Dele Alli’s flick and volley last year against Crystal Palace.”

The goal was the second important strike Giroud had contributed in a matter of days, with the Frenchman scoring a late winner against West Bromwich Albion earlier in the week.

The 30-year-old has been used sparingly at times by Arsene Wenger but his record this season is impressive. He has only two Premier League starts to his name, and 10 substitute appearances, and five goals.
