Redknapp lauds ‘clever’ Everton ace who caused Spurs player problems ‘all the time’

Jamie Redknapp has lauded the ‘clever’ James Rodriguez for his impressive debut during Everton’s 1-0 win over Tottenham on Sunday.

The former Spurs midfielder told Sky Sports PL (13/09/20 at 5:50 pm) that Rodriguez caused Ben Davies problems ‘all the time’ on his right-hand side.

Whilst it’s only one game, Rodriguez’s signing, and first game, will excite those at Goodison because they have been searching long and hard for that player to take them to the next level.

On his first outing, Redknapp, liked what he saw from Rodriguez and how positive and comfortable he looked against Jose Mourinho’s men.

“Very impressed,” Redknapp told Sky Sports. “I think the position he is playing suits him off that right-hand side where he can come inside on his favoured left foot. Play clever passes and get his shots away as well.

“He is always progressive with his passes. Looking to slid people in. I am sure the Evertonians are enjoying what they are seeing. He’s a very comfortable player. He looks assured.

“He’s not blessed with blistering pace, so he’s not going to run past Ben Davies. But you can see Ben Davies, all the time, he knows he has a problem – He’s very clever in the positions he’s picking up.”

Now, it’s all about consistency for the left-footed playmaker, who has represented both Real Madrid and Bayern Munich during his career.

The 29-year-old has showcased his talents on occasions for those European giants, it’s just a case that he hasn’t been able to produce it consistently, nor take his game to the level many were expecting him to.

But the one coach who has managed to get the best out of Rodriguez is a certain Italian who is now patrolling the touchlines at Goodison Park, so things are looking positive for those on the blue half of Merseyside.
