Jamie Redknapp told Sky Sports PL (27/12/20 at 9:40 pm) that Tanguy Ndombele deserves more credit for turning around his Tottenham career than Jose Mourinho.

The TV pundit stated that he has been ‘so impressed’ with Tottenham’s club-record signing after he scored during his side’s 1-1 draw against Wolves on Sunday.

At the start of 2020, Ndombele would have felt that his Tottenham career was over before it even started after publicly being called out by Mourinho for his lack of effort.

But Redknapp lauded the midfielder for winning back the trust of his manager and also producing the goods himself.

“I think you have to give him a lot of credit,” said Redknapp. “I think it’s a good example that you have to give players time because when he first arrived, it’s totally different to the leagues he has played in before and you don’t know quite how it’s going to work out.

“A manager leaves halfway through the season. A new manager comes in and he didn’t feel he trusted him and he has pushed Ndombele to produce these kinds of performances. You have to credit the manager, but you have to credit the player more.

Tottenham Hotspur’s record signings

  1. Tanguy Ndombele

    £56 million

  2. Davinson Sanchez

    £42 million

  3. Moussa Sissoko

    £30 million

  4. Erik Lamela

    £29 million

  5. Steven Bergwijn

    £25 million

“He’s the one who fundamentally has to make that change. He has to start to realise that you cannot just play when you have got the ball. I have been so impressed with how he has turned his Tottenham career around.

“It would have been very easy for him to sulk to a certain extent and think ‘the manager doesn’t fancy me, what’s the point?’. But he hasn’t – He has forced his way into the team. Playing ahead of the likes of Lo Celso but he’s become one of the most important players.”

Ndombele is now one of Tottenham’s key players and not many would have of thought that they would have said that at the start of this current campaign.

Now that the Frenchman has improved on his fitness levels, he can now do the business with the ball, which was never a problem with the player.

He has displayed throughout this campaign that he has the ability to pick the ball up from deep and drive through the opposition barriers in front of him with absolute ease.
