Leeds United’s under-23 team sit bottom of their division, 10 points adrift after an uninspiring season.

The team have been without the most talented youngsters in the age group, with Ronaldo Vieira, Charlie Taylor and Kalvin Phillips all regulars within the first team squad.

As for the next wave of players, they are struggling to put themselves on the map for good reasons, and former academy chief Neil Redfearn has had his say.

Speaking to Radio Yorkshire on Wednesday evening at 6pm, two days after the side’s latest defeat 1-0 home loss to QPR, Redfearn insisted that the poor results is down to cost cutting at the club.

He said: “They’ve got the players, the players are there. A lot of good people have gone from academy. There’s been a lot of change. There lies the problem.

With regards the players coming through, Phillips, Denton, Coyle, they were around it anyway. It’s what comes through now, maybe Malik Wilks. I think there’s players there good enough to progress, but its difficult when there has been cost cutting.”

Redfearn did not say as much, but it is clear he holds co-owner Massimo Cellino responsible, with the Italian overseeing everything at the club since taking over in 2014.
