Former Leeds United head coach Neil Redfearn says that striker Chris Wood should remain on the bench for the upcoming trip.

Wood was dropped for the home game against Blackburn Rovers this week, and came on as a substitute to score the opening goal in the 2-1 win.

The New Zealand international is the club’s top league scorer with three goals.

This does not necessarily mean he should start, believes Redfearn, who told Radio Yorkshire that Wood is relishing his impact role.

Speaking to the Yorkshire Football Show on Wednesday night at 6pm, he said: “I would start the same, if it’s nor broke don’t fix it.

“He’s [Monk] got Wood the right way round. He seems quite a sensitive kid, the pressure of playing up there is a big ask, and he looked like a weight had been lifted off his shoulders when he came on.

“So if that’s what you need to do to get him into a good place…, but you have got to get good quality into Antonsson, he’s not the biggest.”

Redfearn’s argument about Wood playing with more freedom off the bench may be fair, but how long this continues will be dependent on how well Marcus Antonsson performs.

The Swede has one league goal all season, and if he gets the start and does not net against Cardiff, then he may find that he is switched out for the following game.
