Tottenham dealt another Champions League thrashing to Red Star Belgrade on Wednesday night and Mauricio Pochettino’s opposite number Vladan Milojevic has admitted to HotSport that his side were simply no match for a ‘fantastic’ Spurs side.
It was a night full of positives for a previously out-of-form Tottenham in the Serbian capital.
Giovani Lo Celso netted his first ever goal for the club, Heung-Min Son put the weekend’s drama behind him with two well taken finishes, Ryan Sessegnon produced a maiden assist after his big-money move from Fulham, and there was even time for Christian Eriksen, who has looked a shadow of his brilliant best of late, to get on the scoresheet.
Tottenham are now all-but guaranteed to reach the knock-out rounds after scoring nine times over two games against Red Star and Milojevic is glad to see the back of a side who reached the final of the competition as recently as May.
“We knew they were fantastic players,” he said. “We tried to create our chances. We had a chance to score, we failed, and they are level ahead of us.
“We can’t be asked to play in (the Serbian) league and be competitive in games like this. This level is higher. You saw what a great team it was; fantastic, fast, strong.”
Tottenham welcome an in-form Sheffield United to north London on Saturday and few Spurs fans would have expected at the start of the season they would be going into the game five places behind Chris Wilder’s newly-promoted side in the table.
Though a confidence-boosting 4-0 win has come at a perfect time as Pochettino aims to find a way to open up the most stringent defence in the English top flight.
