Rectifying Bilic’s mistake: Moyes admits he has a problem with West Ham’s squad, needs signings

David Moyes is seemingly looking for January additions for his West Ham squad.

West Ham United boss David Moyes has told the London Evening Standard that he feels his squad is imbalanced in a number of areas.

The Hammers were left ruing their luck against Bournemouth on Tuesday afternoon, as having come back from 2-1 down to lead 3-2 in added time, Callum Wilson’s controversial equaliser stood, handing the Cherries a 3-3 draw.

Whilst Moyes will be fuming that the goal was allowed to stand, given that Wilson was offside and appeared to handle the ball into the net, he will have to look ahead now.

One point from games against Newcastle United and Bournemouth wasn’t ideal, and Moyes may be looking to add new faces during the January transfer window as he looks to shape his own squad.

Now, Moyes has told the London Evening Standard that he feels his squad is imbalanced right now, highlighting some areas he wants to resolve in January.

Moyes suggested that he has a number of players who can play down the left flank but not enough players comfortable on the right, and also believes he has too many strikers and not enough central midfielders.

“I’ve got to say every player has shown great desire and is committed in training, but I think we’re short in some areas and overloaded in others,” said Moyes. “For example, we’ve got lots of forwards, but we’re really short of midfield players. We’ve got quite a few who are comfortable playing on the left, but not so many who can play on the right, so we’ve got a little bit of an imbalanced squad which we’ve got to straighten out in January if we can.”

Moyes has been attempting to jam left backs Aaron Cresswell and Arthur Masuaku into his side, but he doesn’t have similar options on the right, and he may pursue a player who can not only play on the right of midfield, but also as cover for Pablo Zabaleta at right back or right wing back.

The Hammers boss desperately needs another central midfielder, with Diafra Sakho potentially the striker to make way, but Moyes is now finding just how poorly the squad was put together under Slaven Bilic, with a clear lack of balance in the West Ham side – and Moyes will hope to rectify those problems next month.
