Sheffield Wednesday’s Under-23s were due to face their Burnley counterparts in Ashton-under-Lyme on Monday.
Sheffield Wednesday fans’ hopes of seeing Sam Hutchinson and Joost van Aken in action at Leeds on Saturday have been dealt a blow, after the postponement of Monday’s Under-23 fixture against Burnley.
The Premier League side announced earlier in the day that a pitch inspection was due to take place at Curzon Ashton’s Tameside Stadium – where the game was due to be held – following heavy rain across the Pennines. And Wednesday have since confirmed the fixture will no longer go ahead as planned.
Hutchinson and Van Aken returned to action with the U23s last Thursday, but were expected to add to their match practice before being considered for first team selection for the first time this year. And the news will also come as a blow to Barry Bannan, the pair’s Owls colleague, who was on course to make his first appearance at any level since December 9th.
Since his appointment as Sheffield Wednesday manager in the early January, Jos Luhukay has had a minimum of 10 senior players missing for each of his games in charge. However, there is at least a flicker of light at the end of the tunnel, with Keiren Westwood hinting at a comeback on Twitter on Sunday.
Wednesday, who remain 17th in the second tier, will also hope to have Kieran Lee, Marco Matias Gary Hooper and Fernando Forestieri back before the season’s end, although Ross Wallace and Steven Fletcher are set to miss the rest of the campaign.
