Remember Fulham’s record flop Kostas Mitroglou…? Well he has only gone and emulated West Ham United legend Paolo Di Canio while playing for Greece.

Mitroglou was signed on deadline day in January 2014 for a reported fee of £12.4 million, making him the clubs record transfer fee paid for a player.

The Greek international arrived in West London with a big reputation having made his name at Olympiakos where he scored 62 goals in 148 appearances before joining the Cottagers.

But things did not work out for Mitroglou or Fulham as he went on to make only three appearances during 2013-14, and featured in two pre-season friendlies a year apart in 2015 and earlier this summer in between loan and permanent moves to Benfica.

Fulham now find themselves languishing in the Championship and given his big fee and lack of appearances, the Greece star goes down in the history books as one of the worst signings in the club’s history.

But not only is he performing well for Benfica with 20 goals in 34 games, he is also doing it on the international stage.

The striker scored an audacious scissor kick volley to rival Di Canio’s famous effort against Wimbledon as he fired home against Gibraltar in a 4-1 World Cup qualification win on Tuesday night.
