Tottenham Hotspur could get a £50 million windfall from selling Kyle Walker. Should they put it all towards Virgil Van Dijk?
Tottenham Hotspur have been fending off interest from Kyle Walker all summer from Manchester City, although The Mirror insist Pep Guardiola’s side are set to step up their pursuit.
This is after losing out on Dani Alves to PSG, and Tottenham could soon have a dilemma whether to accept £50 million.
The only thing more difficult that deciding whether to cash in, is working out how to spend it.
England’s Kyle Walker in action
The last time Tottenham received a big fee was when they sold Gareth Bale, and they sought to spread it around by buying seven different players. It did not work out successfully, with only two remaining at the club four years on.
Instead the other option is to put the money towards an even bigger transfer, and Tottenham should not rule it out.
At the end of last season pundit Tony Cascarino called on Tottenham to enter the race for Southampton defender Virgil Van Dijk in his column for The Times.
Southampton want £60 million for the centre-back, who is lacking potential suitors after Liverpool had to apologise for tapping up the defender, and Chelsea moved for Antonio Rudiger.
Southampton’s Virgil van Dijk
Tottenham should not need to spend the Kyle Walker money on another right-back. They already have England international Kieran Trippier, and England under-20 World Cup winner Kyle Walker-Peters, who scored for them in pre-season yesterday.
Van Dijk would be an unbelievable signing for Tottenham given their desire to play with three at the back.
They already have two outstanding centre-backs, Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld. Van Dijk would become a third, and give them the most formidable defence the Premier League may ever have seen.
