Diogo Goncalves has made just five Championship appearances since he joined Nottingham Forest on loan from Benfica last summer.

Nottingham Forest fans were hoping that they were about to follow in Wolves’ golden footsteps when super-agent Jorge Mendes brought some of Portugal’s most exciting young talents to the City Ground in the summer.

But while Ruben Neves and Diogo Jota shone at Molineux, inspiring Wolves to the Championship title, the likes of Joao Carvalho and Gil Dias have struggled to live up to expectations in the East Midlands.

£13 million record signing Carvalho has fallen out of favour under Martin O’Neill while Dias left Forest in January, moving to Olympiakos instead. And things haven’t exactly gone too well for Diogo Goncalves either.

The 22-year-old has made just five Championship appearances all season, two of those coming since O’Neill replaced Aitor Karanka a month ago, and his most notable ‘achievement’ so far was a red card against Stoke City in September.

A Bola reported that Benfica were set to re-call on loan Goncalves in January and now it seems that a return to Portugal might have been for the best.

According to the Nottingham Post, Forest will have to pay a record £18 million if they want to sign him permanently. But Goncalves needs to have a remarkable two months to make that happen.
