Rangers have been linked with a move to lure Mexer to Ibrox.

Rangers are being linked with a whole host of players, and fans will have spotted a new link emerging late last night, with Rennes defender Mexer believed to be a target.
French newspaper L’Equipe report that Rangers boss Steven Gerrard was spotted in a restaurant in Rennes on Thursday afternoon, and it’s thought that a move for Mexer was the reason.
Rangers certainly need a centre back this summer. Gareth McAuley is out of contract and unlikely to receive a new deal, whilst loanee Joe Worrall will be returning to Nottingham Forest.
Mexer, a 30-year-old defender with experience in Portugal and France as well as with the Mozambique national team, certainly fits the bill for the Gers.
He’s strong, standing at 6ft 2in tall, and the real lure is that he’s a free agent this summer, with Rennes unable to get him tied down to a new contract so far.
However, Rangers may not have it all their own way. Goal recently reported that Bordeaux are keen on landing Mexer for free themselves, with two key reasons stated.

The first being that they’ve missed out on Le Havre defender Harold Moukoudi, who has signed for Saint-Etienne, and the second being their fears that star defender Jules Kounde could move on this summer.
Staying in France may be appealing to Mexer, after five years there, but Bordeaux sit six points behind Rennes, with both in the bottom half of Ligue 1. That makes it seems like either a backwards or a sideways move for the defender, who should be looking at an exciting move at this stage in his career.
Playing under Gerrard may just be worth a gamble for Mexer, especially with the Gers in the Europa League qualifiers again this summer, and Rangers have a very real chance to beat Bordeaux to Mexer’s signature this summer.
