The young forward spent time with Rangers shortly before Steven Gerrard’s arrival as manager.

The manager of a Scottish League Two side is urging one of his young players to ignore interest from the likes of Rangers.

Michael Ruth, the Queen’s Park forward, had a trial spell at Rangers a year ago.

But according to the Scottish Sun, Steven Gerrard’s side aren’t the only ones keen to add him to their youth ranks.

And Mark Roberts, the Spiders’ boss, has told the same publication that Ruth can emulate Andrew Robertson, the Liverpool left-back, if he stays at Hampden Park.

“Michael is attracting interest from a number of clubs who are keen to see him join their youth programmes,” claimed Roberts. “I have told him that he would be better staying here and playing first-team football for another season or two than playing reserve-team football.

“We have a tradition here of playing youngsters in our first team if they are good enough. In return, you can see the benefit first-team football has given them.

“Andrew Robertson, Lawrence Shankland (the Rangers-supporting Ayr United striker) and Blair Spittal (the Partick Thistle midfielder) are just three examples of players that stayed here and played first-team football rather than go into development academies. They have gone on to have good careers.

“Hopefully, Michael will see that as the route to go down.”

Ruth was part of the young Rangers side that toured Germany in May 2018, shortly after making his senior debut while still school-aged.

But, despite having experienced a drop in division, the Scotland youth international has found opportunities harder to come by this season.

He did, however, score and assist on his first league start of the campaign earlier this month.
