Howard Wilkinson has suggested to The Times that Leeds United should aim for 10th or eighth in the Premier League table this season.
The former Leeds manager believes that the West Yorkshire club could end up in the top 10.
However, Wilkinson has added that Leeds head coach Marcelo Bielsa should introduce that target to his players only when it looks like it could be achieved.
Wilkinson told The Times: “I’d set a reasonable bar of tenth or eighth. When it started to look like that was a possibility, then I’d start to introduce that to my players — but not until it was actually an attainable target.”
Top-10 finish for Leeds United?
Leeds started the season strongly, narrowly losing to Liverpool and holding Manchester City to a draw in the Premier League.
However, recent results and performances of the Whites have been disappointing and have raised some doubts, especially over their defence.
Leeds lost 4-1 to Leicester City and went down 4-1 to Crystal Palace just days later in the Premier League before the two-week international break.
Bielsa’s side need to improve defensively, but there are some very good footballers in the squad, such as Kalvin Phillips and Pablo Hernandez.
The main objective for Leeds should be to finish above the relegation zone, but if they do well in the coming weeks and months, then a top-10 finish could well be on the cards.
