Alex Crook has told White and Jordan on talkSPORT that Southampton are trying to insert a £40 million release clause in Danny Ings’ contract amid rumours that Tottenham want to sign him.
The talkSPORT journalist shared that despite it being a ‘reasonable amount’, Ings and his representatives have ‘one fee in mind’ and Southampton have a ‘bigger one’ – the £40 million.
There’s no doubt that Ings is one of the top strikers in the Premier League and he would elevate any team in Europe because of his all-round qualities.
Nonetheless, amid all the Ings talk, Crook’s claimed that Tottenham are ‘monitoring’ Ings’ situation and shared the details involving his contract talks.
“I understand that Danny Ings is happy with the personal terms that have been offered,” said Crook. “Basically, Southampton have offered him a package that would make him their highest-paid player ever.
“The stumbling block, as I understand it, is the amount of money that they are asking for in terms of a release clause. Danny Ings and his representatives have one fee in mind and Southampton have a bigger one to protect their asset. Tottenham are monitoring this situation closely.
“The figure that has mentioned to me [release clause] is £40 million, which I think it’s a reasonable amount for a player of his age and potentially suspect injury record.”
The problem Ings would have in joining Tottenham is that there is a certain Harry Kane leading the line.
Ings would struggle to earn regular game time at Spurs and would then harm his chances of going to the Euros with England in the summer.
But given Kane’s playmaker qualities this season. Could Kane play as a 10 and Ings as the number nine? Because the England captain has shown that he can more than play that role this season.
