Speaking on the No Tippy Tappy Football Podcast, Duncan Ferguson has been speaking to Sam Allardyce about his departure from Everton.
Big Sam, of course, took over Everton during the 2017/18 season after a poor start under Ronald Koeman that year.
In typical Allardyce fashion, the former Bolton boss ground out some decent results with the Merseyside club, but his style of play didn’t quite resonate with the fanbase, and thus, he was removed from his post at the end of the season despite securing an eighth-place finish for the Toffees.
While many Everton fans rejoiced at Allardyce’s departure, Ferguson felt that the manager was very unlucky to lose his job at that juncture.
Ferguson backs Allardyce
The Everton legend told Big Sam that he should never have left Everton.
“No you did a great job with Sammy coming in too. You were really unfortunate to lose your job and you shouldn’t have lost your job. I’ve always been a big backer of Sam, we get on well, we didn’t always agree, but he knew I was loyal,” Ferguson said.
Hindsight is 20/20
Looking back, it’s fair to say that Allardyce shouldn’t have lost his job.
Most Everton fans would bit your hands off if you offered them an eighth-place finish now, but back in 2018 the expectations were different.
Back then, Everton were looking up to the European spots, but now, due to many elements of poor club management, they’re often looking over their shoulders at the relegation places.
At the time, Allardyce leaving Everton didn’t seem like the worst decision in the world, but looking back it looks like an incredibly harsh decision.
Ferguson is right, Allardyce probably shouldn’t have lost his job at Goodison Park after less than a season.
