Tony Cascarino told talkSPORT Breakfast (10/01/21 at 7:15 am) that Gareth Bale is fighting for his ‘future in football’ ahead of Tottenham’s FA Cup showdown with non-league Marine today.
The former Republic of Ireland striker described Bale’s situation at Tottenham as ‘very strange’ and touched up how there is worry from Jose Mourinho and those in Spain about where he is currently at.
Bale’s motor is not accelerating at the speed he would have liked following his return to Spurs in the summer.
Nonetheless, ahead of Tottenham’s game against Marine today, Cascarino shared his thoughts on the Wales superstar.
On Gareth Bale playing against Marine: “And his future in football, for me,” said Cascarino. “I think he’s played 11 of the 23 games Spurs have had, which is a poor return.
“There were reports yesterday going around from Spain that Jose has been hugely disappointed by Bale. That he didn’t match the standards that he thought he would be. It’s without a doubt that he hasn’t played very well since he has been at Spurs.
“I saw him previously, before he joined Tottenham, for Wales, and he didn’t play particularly well in them games. I think he has paid the price for not playing football for a long time.
“Real Madrid, by an article that I read, they were very concerned about Bale because they think if he continues not playing then there will be no takers for him and they are desperate to get him off the books. It’s really strange. He has to have a very good 2021.”
The key thing that needs to be remembered is that there is still a long way to go in regards to Bale having a serious impact on Spurs.
It’s understandable that he hasn’t been able to get going as he would have liked because he has missed so much football over the years.
But if Bale can be efficient during the second half of the campaign and help Spurs win a trophy then those fans in North London won’t care about how little he has or hasn’t played.
