Scottish Premiership giants Rangers reportedly want to sign Jonathan Klinsmann from Bundesliga outfit Hertha Berlin this summer.

There was always going to be plenty of scrutiny on young Jonathan Klinsmann. His father, Jurgen, is one of the most influential figures in German football after all.

And following in the footsteps of a legend is never easy; just ask Jordi Cruyff, Joel Cantona and Enzo Zidane. But the early signs are positive for Klinsmann Jr who, unlike his prolific father, is a goalkeeper rather than a centre-forward.

At the age of 22, he is a regular for Hertha Berlin’s reserves and it seemed only a matter of time before he makes his Bundesliga debut. That is, unless he leaves the Olympiastadion for Rangers this summer.

According to the Scottish Sun, Rangers are keen to snap up Klinsmann when his contract expired his summer. Hertha will be desperate to keep their 6ft 4ins glovesman but, the report adds, his future is uncertain as he is frustrated by life in the reserves.

And while the cynics will argue that young Jonathan can never reach the heights scaled by the former Tottenham and Bayern Munich striker Jurgen, the goalkeeper certainly has a habit of proving people wrong.

Head coach Jurgen Klinsmann of the United States looks on after playing against New Zealand during an International Friendly at RFK Stadium on October 11, 2016 in Washington, DC.

“Jonathan has shown the right reaction,” Hertha’s goalkeeping coach Zsolt Petry told the Bundesliga’s website last year, shortly after accusing Klinsmann of a poor attitude.

“He now catches balls that he didn’t hold onto before. He now also invests more time in his body, works more on his power, puts in really special shifts. That impresses me.

“He reflected himself and didn’t see himself as a victim, that’s a good sign. It may be that he was mad at me for these clear words, but it’s my job to make it clear to him as his coach how he can get better.”

Klinsmann is a headstrong, confident character and Rangers should be aware that he would not accept a back-up role lying down if he does swap the German capital for Glasgow this summer.
