Peter Schmeichel told CBS Sports on Paramount+ (28/04/21 at 10:45 pm) that it was ‘really, really wrong’ for the likes of Liverpool, Tottenham and the rest of the so-called big six to try and breakaway to a European Super League.
Those two or three days of utter chaos, carnage and shameful actions will go down as the biggest own goal in football history and the Manchester United legend suggested that this is something that has been cooking up ‘since 1999’.
And whilst the likes of Liverpool have apologised, alongside Manchester United, the Tottenham faithful are still waiting for one from their chairman, Daniel Levy.
Liverpool and Manchester United perhaps took the biggest hits because their American owners were seemingly seen as the architects for this infamous league that is still seemingly standing, according to Real Madrid’s president, Florentino Pérez.
This is the first time Champions League/Europa League football has returned to our screens, since the ESL drama, and Schmeichel was asked to share his thoughts on the matter.
“I have to say to be so disrespectful to everybody else in football, apart from yourself, I thought that was really, really wrong,” said Schmeichel.
“There’s no consideration to grassroots football or even women’s side of football. They just announced that they were going to do a women’s tournament as well, without consulting anyone.
“They were just doing it for the sake of making more money. And we have known this since 1999. They have tried, the same clubs have been trying to get a bigger slice of the Champions League revenue.
“I thought when the rumblings began that this was another attempt to get more money out of the CL. And I have to admit, I was completely shocked that they went all the way and I am, personally, very happy it’s not happening because I think it would have been very wrong for football.”
Many are still fearing that the sharks are still swimming around hoping to pounce again.
But in truth, their tactics, even if they now have good intentions, won’t work because the supporters will no longer listen.
As for the six English clubs involved, Levy was pretty clever in sacking Jose Mourinho as all of this drama broke, whilst Liverpool’s owners have a tough task, as do all of the teams, in re-building that trust with the supporters.
