Pat Nevin claimed that Harvey Elliott looked ‘really, really sharp’ during Liverpool’s 3-1 FA Cup win against Cardiff on Sunday, as he told BBC Sport.

The 18-year-old, who has been out injured with a broken ankle since September, returned by scoring for the Reds during their comfortable win against the Championship side.

Only months ago, Elliott would have hit rock bottom after that horror ankle injury away at Leeds United.

But his recovery during that period has been simply remarkable and now he is back on the field of play showcasing his young talent once more.

Elliott’s left-footed volley was a thing of beauty against the Welsh side and former Chelsea winger, Nevin, loved how he took his goal today.

“His first touch just lays it up for him in one movement,” said Nevin. “But listen to that reaction of the Kop to him scoring.

“Just when you are coming back from an injury. There is always doubt. There are a number of things you have to overcome.

“Can I do that quickly? Will I be able to take the tackles? Will people have forgotten what I do? Will I get a chance?

“They are all answered and he has only been on the park for 20 odd minutes or something. He has looked really, really sharp. That was a fantastic goal.”

With Luis Diaz also on Liverpool’s books after his January transfer, it makes Jurgen Klopp’s forward line stronger than it already is.

Not forgetting that a certain African Cup of Nations finalist duo – Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah – are also set to return.

With Liverpool in every competition heading into the crunch months of the season, that added depth might prove to be the difference.

The Reds are going strong in the Champion League, they have a League Cup final against Chelsea awaiting them and they face Norwich City in the next round of the FA Cup.

Whilst Manchester City are steamrolling away from their rivals in the Premier League, if anyone can catch them, then it’s those from Merseyside.
