Paul Scholes told the Webby & O’Neil Youtube Channel that Liverpool have had a ‘really poor’ this season and he doesn’t think Manchester City have been ‘amazing’ either despite becoming champions.
In the end, it was a pretty straightforward Premier League title win for those at the Etihad, with Liverpool ending the season in third spot.
At one point, the knives were out for those in Liverpool colours, with Roy Keane labelling them ‘bad champions’ as it looked like they were going to miss out on Champions League football and perhaps European football altogether.
But during the last ten games of the season, they managed to claw their way back and finish third – Man City are the only other team in the last decade, who have become champions, and then secured Champions League football the following campaign.
So, these ‘bad champions’ didn’t make such a poor defence of their title after all given the circumstances they were in, but Scholes thinks it was a ‘really poor defence’, which won’t sit well with fans.
“I don’t think Manchester City have been amazing this year,” said Scholes. “I think they have been better in years gone by. They had a slow start. You go back to December and January, I think they were sixth and seventh in the league.
“We all know the problems with Liverpool and their defence. They have had a really poor season. And they have had a really poor defence of the league.
“But I don’t like talking about them too much. We have to think about ourselves.”
It will be interesting how both Manchester clubs and Liverpool tackle the summer market because whoever comes out on top might just be lifting the title at the end of it all
Both Manchester clubs seemingly need a striker, whilst Liverpool may add more defensive cover and refresh their ageing forward line.
Either way, there are some top talents around Europe, at the moment, from Jadon Sancho to Erling Haaland.
And if they land on either of the above doors then it would transform their teams, without a doubt.
