Despite Liverpool getting a 2-0 win against Newcastle United at St. James’ Park, Jamie Carragher was extremely unimpressed with their defending, especially during set-pieces.
Jurgen Klopp’s men seemed worse off after Nick Pope got himself comically sent off, as they both struggled to create chances whilst the hosts were causing them a whole host of issues in attack.
As the set-pieces started to pile up for Newcastle, so did the troubles faced by Liverpool in defending them, which was noticed by Jamie Carragher.
Carragher criticises Liverpool on set-pieces in Newcastle win
Ultimately, the result remains immensely positive for the Reds, building on their impressive 2-0 victory against Everton in the Merseyside Derby.
On Sky Sports, Jamie Carragher commented during the Newcastle game, saying, “Liverpool’s defending on set-pieces has been absolutely shocking today. Really poor.”

He also criticised his former side’s defending, saying, “It is too easy to get at Liverpool.”
Ultimately, it’s hard to disagree with the Reds legend and the Magpies may consider themselves unlucky that they could not put the ball in the back of the net at least once during such situations.
Liverpool need to work on this side of the game ahead of Real Madrid clash
Ultimately, Jamie Carragher is being anything but reactionary as Liverpool poorly defended set-pieces against not just Newcastle but in their 3-1 defeat to Brentford as well.
If two of the Bees’ goals were not chalked off, the scoreline would have made for extremely grim reading. As last season’s Champions League finalists meet the defending champions next week, the last thing they should do is give the most inevitable winners of the competition a free hit at getting a goal or two.
Instead, taking on board the advice from Jamie Carragher and working on how to defend set-pieces after reflecting on their win against Newcastle will do Liverpool a world of good against Real Madrid.
