Speaking on The Overlap, Jamie Carragher has been discussing Leeds United’s defence and their struggles this season.

Leeds’ backline has been, in a word, terrible this term. They’re leaking goals and making so many silly individual errors.

Usually, when a defence is lacking, the finger will be pointed largely at the manager and his set-up, but Carragher has actually stated that he believes that individually Leeds’ back four is really poor.

Indeed, the pundit says that he always feels as though there is a mistake on the horizon for any of Leeds’ defenders, stating that he’s unconvinced by the Whites’ backline.

Carragher slates Leeds’ defenders

The Sky pundit gave his verdict on this area of Leeds’ squad.

“I think the back four is really poor individually. I don’t know about the system, but when you see them as players you always feel as though there are mistakes there,” Carragher said.

Not good enough

Carragher is being a bit harsh when calling Leeds’ defenders ‘really poor’, but his point is valid, these players aren’t good enough.

Liam Cooper and Luke Ayling have been Championship defenders for a long time for a reason, Junior Firpo is nowhere near intense enough to play at this level, Pascal Struijk is continuously being used out of position while Diego Llorente looks consistently out of his depth.

Leeds have some very talented players in their squad, but sadly, very few of those so-called players are defenders.

Victor Orta has a big job to do over the next 12 months, and his first port of call should be to rebuild this shakey backline, otherwise, Leeds will continue conceding goals at a remarkably alarming rate.
