Speaking on the Ranks FC Podcast, Dean Jones has been discussing Chelsea’s potential Deadline Day moves, and he’s been talking up a potential bid for Ivan Toney.

It’s an open secret that the Blues want a new striker through the door before the close of play on Thursday – hence the constant links to Pierre-Emerick Aubamayeng, but according to Jones, Toney is another who could be on the Blues’ radar.

Indeed, the journalist says that it’s not likely, but the Brentford striker and reported Leeds United target could be a left-field addition before the window slams shut.

What’s been said?

Jones spoke about Toney and Chelsea’s plans.

“Let’s look at who else they might bid for. Wilfried Zaha that’s been talked about quite a lot and it has a lot of potential. Another one that is really left-field, but I’ve been told to just keep an eye on it just in case it’s a last minute and they go for it is Ivan Toney. I don’t think it’s likely but it’s being looked at,” Jones said.

Great addition

Toney may not be the most glamorous signing Chelsea could make on Deadline Day, but he is a fantastic player.

The Brentford ace is now proven at this level, he’s a multi-faceted striker who can score in a number of ways and he’s about so much more than goals with his link-up play also being exceptional.

Chelsea need a number nine through the door, and while someone like Aubameyang may catch the eye more than the Englishman, if the Blues are thinking long-term, Toney is someone they should be going for.

Unfortunately for the Blues, the likes of Leeds and Everton have also been credited with an interest lately, so if they’re going to get this one done, they need to get a move on.
