Darren Bent has questioned on TalkSport (11/10/20 at 3:45 pm) why Tottenham are pushing for Joe Rodon’s signature given the number of centre-back’s they already have on their books.

Jose Mourinho’s chosen one at the back has been Eric Dier, who has partnered the likes of Toby Alderweireld and Davinson Sanchez, with academy product Japhet Tanganga also another option.

The Daily Mail claims that Swansea’s rising star Rodon is expected to put pen-to-paper with Spurs before Friday’s deadline.

Bent acknowledged that Spurs seem ‘really keen’ on Rodon’s signature, but before he could comment on that, he couldn’t stop laughing when he was told that Swansea want £18 million for their player, but Daniel Levy initially only offered £7 million.

“I thought you were going to say something like he offered £5 less,” Bent laughed.

“But listen, they seem really keen on getting him, don’t they? Rodon in the door. You look at the amount of centre-back’s they have. I know they lost Vertonghen. But they have Toby Alderweireld, Sanchez, Eric Dier plays back there and Tanganga can play there.

“I mean, how many centre-back’s are they looking for?”

Tottenham Hotspur’s summer signings

  1. Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg

    £15 million; Southampton

  2. Joe Hart

    Free

  3. Matt Doherty

    £13 million; Wolves

  4. Sergio Reguilon

    £25 million; Real Madrid

  5. Gareth Bale

    Loan; Real Madrid

  6. Carlos Vinicius

    Loan; Benfica

  7. Joe Rodon

    £12 million; Swansea

On one hand, it could be argued that Spurs needed another fresh pair of legs at the back following their performances in that area last season and then the departure of Jan Vertonghen in the summer.

But on the other, it could potentially disrupt the rise of Tangana, who was a bright spark at the back last season despite the club as a whole stagnating.

Either way, given the high volume of fixtures Spurs have to play then any added depth is useful.
