Jamie Carragher has now shared his thoughts on Liverpool’s decision to abandon their pursuit of Jude Bellingham.

What’s the story?

Well – according to The Times and a number of other news outlets – Liverpool are no longer in the running to sign Bellingham this summer after withdrawing from the race.

The reason for that? It is said that Jürgen Klopp feels he needs a number of reinforcements, and therefore cannot afford to spend most of his budget on a deal for the England international, which is expected to exceed £120m.

Carragher believes a number of Liverpool fans will now feel “misled and confused” by this decision, while he himself is infuriated by the development.

Writing in the Telegraph, the 45-year-old stated: “Now, Liverpool have made it known they cannot afford Bellingham, after all. Naturally, there is anger and frustration from those who feel misled and confused.

“What really infuriates me is the red herring that Liverpool have reached the conclusion Bellingham is too expensive on the basis of Klopp’s rebuild being bigger than initially thought. The club knows the elephant in the room is failing to sign a ready-made central midfielder last summer.”

We couldn’t agree more.

Liverpool have made fools of themselves

It’s not as if Bellingham’s price has suddenly shot up to a sum in the region of £120m.

Liverpool knew how much one of Europe’s most attractive prospects would roughly cost, and it now feels as if the Reds are making excuses for failing to oversee appropriate succession planning last summer, when no midfield additions were made.

Klopp now finds himself in a situation where he needs to replace Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Naby Keita, both of whom are set to leave when their contracts expire in July, as well as others.

The likes of Thiago, Fabinho and Jordan Henderson aren’t as reliable as they were due to injuries and dips in form.

If Liverpool fail to oversee a successful midfield overhaul this summer after abandoning their Bellingham pursuit, there will be fury amongst supporters on Merseyside.
